Working as a social enterprise

The Play’s The Thing Theatre Company is a CIC ( Community Interest Company) this means we are a social enterprise and we work for the good of the community. Any profit we make is invested back into the company and the community.  We are still a company who has to report to Companies House and there is nothing against making a profit but it is what we do with that profit that counts.

We also like to invest in people in that we like to offer people opportunities to learn and grow so when student photographer Becky Ainsworth asked if she could come and take photographs back stage for a university project during the week of performance of “Our Town” at Stantonbury Theatre at the beginning of November we were only too pleased to oblige. We of course wanted to help a young person who is studying film making and photography and who wants to build her portfolio the chance to do that.

Becky came along to our second night and took photos of the cast getting made up and then during our warm up session. She was great! She blended right in and captured the lovely informal moments. She decided she would like to process the photos in sepia in keeping with the period of the play. Becky agreed that we could use them on social media and on our website as long as she was properly credited (of course we would do that) so we were very happy. Becky delivered the photos very quickly and it all added to the buzz surrounding the production.

We were so pleased with Becky’s work that we would consider offering her paid work in the future. So it just goes to show it is always worth getting in touch with companies and asking if you can be of help or if you can come in and learn. Companies may be too busy sometimes, but if you ask to be kept in mind you may well find you get results at some time in the future. Here’s a link to Becky’s website  https://rlainsworth.myportfolio.com

Similarly students from MK College studying hair and makeup did their work experience with us. We noted who turned up on time, worked well, took direction and advice from our professional makeup artist and mentor. Again we now have a list of those we could see employing in the future.
